The Glass Castle
Introduction
The Glass Castle was a memoir by Jeannette Walls about the difficulty of her childhood and her development throughout her life. She looks back on her past with light humor and uses a tone that portrays a feeling that she doesn't have a lot of bitterness about it. Her past was one of poverty and want. The font of the text represents that, by the informal use of marker. The design of the blog relates to when her father would say that he was going to build them a Glass Castle. As a child it represented a dream and hope that one day they would have a nice home. When she grew up, she understood that in their situation they would never have the elusive Glass Castle or anything close to it. The shattered glass represents the dreams that never came true for her as a child. Glass is pretty and something you can see through, like a dream or wish. When glass is shattered, you can't see through it anymore. This shows how she felt when she finally realized that the Glass Castle or anything close to it, was not a possibility. Later, she takes her fate into her own hands and creates her own path. This leads into the purple color of the text. Purple is a symbol of wealth and wisdom. This shows that she was wise beyond her years and in her own path that she created she came into some money. She made a living for her self and never went without after she went off on her own.
The survey, acrostic poem, and map are all in the point of view of Jeannette Walls as a child. The invitation and advice column are in the point of view of Walls as an adult.
